This “Oil, acrylic and pencil on aluminum, canvas and gloves” is a raw and symbolic work. The poor figure portrayed by Alfani does not belong to the lucky people on the earth. There is no seduction in such a barren face, that only looks like the mirror of an everyday life without stories and without redemption. But we feel that the painter, while he was scratching on the obscure material and correcting every opulence in burnt earth color. Looking for something that we barely recognize and to which we can give a name. That, for the only reason of being the subject of the portrait, could also be a tyrant or a criminal, a judas or a madman, nobody escapes – if the painter is good – to the risk of finding oneself caught in a veil of humanity, of pity and therefore of beauty. Truth that incarnates in this animal bare appearance is then another. As the wretched empty gloves hung beneath the effigy, that look like those gripped by – with elegance and vigor – Tiziano or Frans Hals’ gentlemen. They are falling and empty, and simultaneously admirable and persuasive. They are our nothing.

Ennio Alfani was born in Tivoli on September 2nd, 1956, he lives and works in Rome. In the year 2000 he had his first personal exhibition at Maniero gallery in Rome, entitled Volti (Faces).
